Balázs Demény | pianist


Balázs Demény is the winner of the Ile de France (2017), Hans von Bülow (2015), and Carl Filtsch International Piano Competitions, and second prize winner of the International Chopin Competition in Budapest. He has appeared at major venues and festivals including the Gasteig München, Palace of Arts Budapest, Bucharest Atheneum, Liszt Academy Great Hall, Raiding Liszt Festival, Budapest Spring Festival, and the Milano World Exhibition. In 2016 he was featured at Japan’s Yokohama International Piano Concerts, performing Bartók’s 3rd Concerto and a Liszt–Bartók recital. He has also received the Géza Anda and Hindemith scholarships, the ISA „Pianist” and „Kodály” prizes, and first prizes at the S. Toduta Competition and the Hungarian Music Festival in Bucharest. His album Schumann and Bartók appeared in 2015 with BMC.

He has worked with conductors such as Jesús López-Cobos, Gábor Hollerung, Mihail Agafiţa, and Gheorghe Costin, performing over 70 concerts with orchestra and a wide concerto repertoire from Bach to contemporary music. Highlights include Tchaikovsky’s Concerto with López-Cobos in 2016 and Liszt’s Totentanz at the Sziget Festival. His two solo albums were followed by recital tours in Hungary and Romania, and he has performed across Europe in cities such as Berlin, Rome, Paris, Lisbon, Brussels, Munich, Cluj, and Bucharest.

He has studied with András Kemenes at the Liszt Academy in Budapest, Georg Sava and Pascal Devoyon in Berlin, and participated in masterclasses with György Kurtág, Zoltán Kocsis, Arie Vardi, and Dmitri Bashkirov. Since 2016 he has been pursuing doctoral studies at the Liszt Academy.
